Baby Sunglasses NZ — Ages 6 Months to 2 Years

Baby sunglasses NZ — protecting little eyes from their very first summer

Most new NZ parents protect their baby's skin with sunscreen and their head with a sun hat — but not their eyes. Yet a baby's eyes are more vulnerable to UV damage than an adult's or older child's: the crystalline lens in an infant's eye is still developing and allows significantly more UV radiation through to the retina than an adult lens does. The Pepi is designed to fix that, from your baby's very first summer onwards.

Te Rā's Pepi is sized specifically for babies aged 6 months to 2 years — the right proportions for small infant faces, not just a scaled-down toddler style. Every pair is certified to AS/NZS 1067.1:2016 with UV400 Category 3 polarised lenses, made from BPA-free, food-grade TR90 flexible frames that are safe even when — not if — they end up in your baby's mouth.

Meet the Pepi

Named after the Māori word for baby, the Pepi is Te Rā's dedicated infant sunglass. Available in Dusty Pink and Ivory White, with a removable elastic headband included to keep them on active little faces. The TR90 frame is virtually unbreakable — designed to survive being pulled off, grabbed, bent, and dropped, which is everything babies do with everything they touch.

The Pepi shares its colour palette with the Koru (ages 5+) — our bestselling kids style — making it the starting point of Te Rā's sibling match range. If you have an older child too, they can wear the same colours.

A perfect gift for a new baby

Baby sunglasses are one of the most practical and underrated gifts for new NZ parents. At $39.99 NZD, the Pepi makes a thoughtful baby shower gift, a first birthday present, or a first-summer surprise from a grandparent or auntie. It arrives ready to give — and it's a gift that actually gets used every time the family heads outside.

What to look for in baby sunglasses — a quick guide

  • AS/NZS 1067.1:2016 certification — the current NZ and Australian safety standard. If a product doesn't list this certification, the UV protection is unverified
  • UV400 Category 3 polarised lenses — blocks 100% of UVA and UVB with glare reduction. Category 3 is the highest standard for general sun use
  • BPA-free, non-toxic frame materials — essential at this age. Babies mouth everything. TR90 is food-grade and safe
  • Flexible frames — rigid plastic cracks. TR90 bends and springs back without snapping
  • Correct sizing — most "baby" sunnies on the market are sized for toddlers and fall off infant faces. Check our size chart before ordering
